Realistic soccer fun for two players on a playing board

Soccer is the most popular team sport in the world, but good soccer board games that are fun to play are few and far between. One problem may be that soccer is fluid with few set piecesΎcorner kicks, penalty kicks, etc. So the goal for the game developer is to keep the game fluid, and Championship Soccer succeeds in doing just that.

Championship Soccer is designed for the 9+ years old market. Since soccer enjoys an almost fanatical appeal to all of Europe, Central, and South America and a growing youth audience in the United States and Canada, the potential market for a good soccer board game is enormous.

Our soccer game is played with (1) special soccer action playing cards (consisting of 6 dribble cards, 6 kick cards in each of three colors and 6 libero (or joker) cards), (2) 6 red penalty cards, (3) two sets of 6 yellow penalty cards numbered 1 – 6, and (4) three dice (one each white, black, and green colored dies).

Each player maintains three cards in his hand for each play. The player controlling the play, the offense, plays a card firstΎa dribble card, a kick card, or a libero card and throws the dice if necessary. The defense then plays a card and/or throws the dice to defend. Both players draw a card from the source pile, and play continues. Control of the ball shifts back and forth from one player to the other as dictated by the cards played and/or the roll of the dice.

The results of cards played and dice thrown allow for most aspects of real soccer such as dribbling, passing (kicking to a teammate), heading the ball, in-bounds throws for balls that are out-of-bounds, fouls, expulsions (represented as a reduction of hand held playing cards from three to two), off-sides, corner kicks, penalty kicks, and goalie plays for kicks on the goal.
