Phenoxyethanol is a typical high-boiling organic solvent, it is a slightly aromatic colorless transparent liquid, with good miscibility, low volatility, strong permeability and other characteristics, outstanding comprehensive performance, can be used as a substitute for many solvents with full performance.

Phenoxyethanol Chinese name is also known as dioxyethanol (2-oxoethanol), oxyethanol, etc., can be etherified from ethylene glycol and phenol, colorless slightly viscous liquid, slightly fragrant, astringent taste. Insoluble in water, can be mixed with acetone, ethanol and glycerol, slightly soluble in water.


Phenoxyethanol is now used as a preservative standard compounds, generally do not release formaldehyde, relative to these compounds that will release formaldehyde, phenoxyethanol is indeed a more excellent alternative.


Because phenoxyethanol has low toxicity and is chemically inactive against copper and lead, it usually functions as a preservative in cosmetics, skin care products, vaccines and pharmaceuticals, as a fixative in perfumes, as an insect repellent, as a topical disinfectant, and in other medicinal applications.


Phenoxyethanol is a common preservative in cosmetics, limited to a maximum concentration of 1%, 0.1%-2% in solution (to which 10% ethanol is added) with antibacterial properties (generally used with quaternary salts), and is often used as a substitute for the highly toxic sodium azide in biological buffer solutions.
